Tympani Lambada — 2011

About

The bone and membrane of the inner ear’s vestibular system are transformed into steel and fire. These systems mostly work unseen, letting us walk, climb, and dance to our hearts’ content. Tympani surrounds us with them, presenting them larger than life, in geometry that plays with our sense of what is possible and not.

The vestibular system arches, evocative of the semi-circular canals of the inner ear, create a dramatic backdrop for the spiral of the cochlea, manifested as a 13-foot high, 15-foot wide liquid fire fountain. The fountain provides a visually stunning yet calmer, more grounded area within the overall sculpture

Effects

Tympani features 42 individually actuated poofer effects along the tallest arches.

The cochlea contains colorful methanol fire in two forms: a slow-moving foundation and a 50' shooter effect.

The LEDs covering the lowest arch make the space colorful and inviting.
