Angel of the Apocalypse
The Angel of the Apocalypse is
an elegant sculptural environment that rises from the ground in the
form of an abstracted bird. The Angel is made from shaped and welded
stainless and mild steel, driftwood and fuel. The Angel's head and wings
are alive with fire, whose dynamic effects are controlled
by the people inside the body space of the installation. The warm,
bright enclosure is an environment inviting celebration of life and
community.
The head of the bird is built from 3/16
in steel plate, curved and layered, standing 14 ft tall with hand blown
glass eyes and serves as an all-night wood-burning fireplace. The
stainless steel wings range in size from 9-20 ft (2-7m) tall. The small
inner feathers have a continuous ambient fire effect with a large
'poof' of flame controlled by participants using glowing buttons
embedded in the driftwood body. The large outer feathers are lit using
low pressure liquid fuel running down the outer spine.
Participants move around and between
the flaming feathers, and climb on and into the driftwood body. All are
invited to operate propane flame effects in the inner wings. The Angel
with its open 'courtyard' space between the wings, body and head
welcomes audience menbers and performance.
